What is "ICD-9 code"* ?
ICD-9 - the
International Classification of Diseases, used in for example hospital
records all over the world and in studies of diseases where a coding is
needed. The ICD-9 code classification is
developed by the World Health Organization in Geneva. Note that ICD-9 and ICD-10
have completely different coding systems. It is usually the national health authority who decides when a new edition will be introduced in a country.
What is the difference between ICD-9 and
ICD-9 CM* ?ICD-9 is developed by WHO, Geneva
and ICD-9 CM (clinical modification) is the
American version of ICD-9. ICD-9 CM is
continuously updated and contains one more level (decimal) than the
original ICD, eg.ICD-9 003.2 Localized salmonella infections is in ICD-9 CM 003.20 Localized salmonella infection,
unspecified, 003.21 Salmonella menigitis, 003.22 Salmonella pneumonitis
etc. The ICD-9 CM may also have more codes on
the first decimal level, eg. 013.0 - 013.9, where ICD-9 only has the codes
013.0, 013.1, 013.8 and 013.9. ICD-9 is used in many countries and is
therefore translated into many languages. More information on ICD-9 CM
is
available at www.cdc.gov .
